Protesting against floods | Wakeboarding in the city streets

A group of young Indonesians protested against the recurrent floods in their city with a spectacular action : wakeboarding in the submerged streets of Samarinda.

Excited by new floods in their town of Samarinda on the island of Borneo, they filmed themselves practicing wakeboarding. But thid time it was behing a car ! The board was pulled by an all-terrain vehicle through the streets of the 800,000 inhabitants city. Their video quickly became viral on Instagram, a very popular social network in Indonesia. In these images, Muhammad Fahri Ramadhan, 19 years old, slides and performs a few figures in the dirty water reaching the size of the few spectators.

Prostesting

The young people hope in this way to call on the local administration, which has already declared a state of emergency after the floods that affected several tens of thousands of inhabitants. The authors of the video also call on residents not to aggravate the situation by dumping their garbage on the streets, which could block the evacuation ducts and pose health risks.

“We want people to be more responsible and not throw out their garbage,” Muhammad Fahri Ramadhan told AFP on Tuesday.

“Most of the people who saw me on the streets and on social networks reacted positively, they thanked us for leading this action,” explained the young man.

Over the past few weeks we were clearing out old Ronix Wakeboards when we decided to try and build what we believe to be the worlds first tandem wakeboard. We do a lot of things together, but riding the same board was definitely a new experience! Was great to get back to JBSki to test this out and look forward to many more crazy ideas to come!”

Finnish athlete breaks the world record of wakeboarding | Erkka Lehtonen

You never thought of that? Erkka Lehtonen did it !

Finnish wakeboarder makes a world record with a consecutive run of over 10 hours, despite falling down after 4 hours ! In addition to breaking a world time record, he had to wait for the ice to melt on the spot. Erkka hung on the rudder for 10 hours after falling in icy water (8°C). Indeed, Finland is known for its very cold winters where the polar night lasts 2 months and when you want to wakeboard, you have to develop another level of perseverance.

“There is definitely power in the audience. They helped me to maintain the positive mindset and keep holding on!”, says Lehtonen.

Erkka Lehtonen, a Finnish water sports professional and entrepreneur, set a new world record of 10 hours and 15 minutes in cable wakeboarding on May 4th. He started his attempt at 6 AM but after almost 4 strenuous hours, he fell, and the clock was reset. Despite the surprising turn of events, Lehtonen decided to restart his performance and give the world record a second chance. The previous cable wakeboarding record was at 10 hours and 5 seconds, which meant that Lehtonen ended up wakeboarding for a staggering 14 hours. After the record was safely in the books, he snapped a selfie and did a cheeky backflip before calling it a day.

The record performance took place in water sports centre Laguuni, located in Espoo, Finland. Laguuni’s cable wakeboarding track is powered by clean energy from solar panels provided by the neighboring clean-energy company Fortum. The solar panels produced around 23 kWh on the day of the world record The additional need was covered by a battery charged with solar power.

Fortum is a proud partner of Laguuni and an avid supporter of Lehtonen.

“The sun shone more and more during the day and the panels kept producing clean solar electricity. It’s great that we were able to set a new world record with solar power and respect the environment”, says Jussi Mälkiä, Fortum’s Brand Manager.

Sure, wakeboarder and Red Bull athlete Dallas Friday is in incredible shape—after all, being able to pull off mid-air tricks like spins and flips is no easy task. But that’s not to say she didn’t prepare for her nude ESPN photo shoot. Like anyone about to bare all on camera (uh, not that we have experience with this), the pro athlete switched up her diet and workout routine to get her body in prime shape for her shoot. (Plus, check out our interview with hammer thrower Amanda Bingson!)

Shape: How did you first get into wake boarding?
Dallas Friday (DF): My brothers had me try it one weekend and I absolutely loved it. I was 12 and at that boy-crazy phase. I strived to be just as good as they are. I’m very competitive—I really wanted to be the best. Ever since that day I got on the water I haven’t turned back.

Shape: What was your reaction to being asked to pose for ESPN’s Body issue?
DF: It was an honor, especially being in the Body Issue. I’ve always looked forward to seeing the athletes tell their story through their body—it’s something really unique for an athlete to be able to do. There are so many girls out there who are self-conscious about their bodies, and I hope to inspire them and let them know that it’s OK to have muscles. You can still be sexy and have an athlete’s physique. I’m sure eventually there will be some negativity, but the people that know me know my reasons for doing this. And that was really just to help grow the sport and inspire girls to do what they love and feel comfortable in their own skin. (Meet the Fit Female Athletes of the ESPN Body Issue.)

Shape: What was it really like to get naked and wakeboard in front of a crew of people?
DF: I knew the photographer and we had a good little talk so that made me feel super comfortable. When they originally told me they wanted to do action shots, I was happy about that because I’m definitely not a model; doing model-type shots are always the awkward ones! For me to be able to just do what I do…I was kind of relieved. Actually getting the shots wasn’t too hard. I didn’t fall once the whole photo shoot! Even though it was in February and it was kind of cold.

Shape: Did you change your diet at all leading up to the shoot?
DF: I cut out carbs for a few weeks prior. It makes it kind of tough to do a sport—I definitely need the energy to properly do the tricks. And then, for about a month before the shoot, I ate fish—a white fish like cod—and broccoli or asparagus for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I got that advice from a few different bodybuilders. They said that’s the way to go and they were right—it toned me down! It definitely helped me look the best I could. Outside of the shoot, I eat for what I do. If I’m riding a lot, I try to get a lot of protein in me to perform how I want.

Shape: Did you do anything different workout-wise?
DF: I did some boxing to really up my cardio and endurance and make me feel strong. I go to a studio called Nine Rounds in Orlando, FL, where you spend 20 minutes on each station. They all vary from some type of kickboxing or one-on-one combination. I focused on my legs, butt, and abs. I also did a lot of squat-type stuff and a lot of sprint work.
