Chengdu, China – History was made last week at the brand-new Panda Wakepark cable, purpose-built for The World Games. Selected based on their world rankings and victories in major competitions, the planet’s top wakeboarders gathered for a long-awaited showdown — and it was Germany’s Julia Rick who stole the spotlight on the Open women division .

The Return of Cable Wakeboarding to The World Games

It had been twenty years since cable wakeboarding last featured at The World Games, with its only appearance in Duisburg, Germany, back in 2005. Known as a multi-sport event for disciplines outside the Olympic and Paralympic programs, The World Games first took place in 1981 in the United States, offering athletes from non-Olympic sports a global stage.

In 2005, four waterski and wakeboard disciplines were on the schedule: Barefoot, Boat Wakeboard, Cable Wakeboard, and Overall Waterski. Back then, Denise De Haan (NED) claimed gold in the women’s cable event, with Kirsten-Brigitte Leifel (GER) and Pauline Dyrschka (GER) rounding out the podium.

Julia Rick Reclaims Her Throne

Fast forward to 2025, and the sport has evolved into a high-powered spectacle, with athletes pushing the limits of what’s possible on a cable. In the women’s division, all eyes were on Julia Rick — the multiple-time world champion and global icon of women’s wakeboarding.

After narrowly missing gold at the World Championships in Paris last September, Rick came to Chengdu with one mission: to win. She delivered under pressure, combining flawless execution with her trademark technical mastery to secure the top step of the podium.

“I’ve been dreaming about this moment since Paris,” said Rick after her victory. “To win gold here, at The World Games, with the world watching, is just incredible.”

Italian rising star Vanessa Titarelli claimed silver, proving once again she’s a serious contender for the sport’s future. Bronze went to the Netherlands’ Sanne Meijer, the reigning Cable World Champion, who also competed in the boat wakeboard event earlier in the week.

The world’s top female rider and breast cancer advocate, Meagan Ethell, continues mission of raising awareness at Boathouse Row with new, stunning imagery

For Meagan Ethell, the world’s top-ranked female wakeboarder, being on the water is not her only passion. October marks the beginning of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and in 2020 Meagan is taking her advocacy and mission to another level. Today, Meagan, in partnership with Red Bull, released a series of stunning imagery featuring her riding a custom wake feature in front of the iconic pink-lit Boathouse Row in Philadelphia.

Meagan, Red Bull and Philadelphia Parks & Recreation teamed up to turn Boathouse Row, a strip of 19th century homes lining Philadelphia’s Schuylkill River, pink in solidarity for Breast Cancer Awareness month and build a custom feature for Meagan to ride in front. Meagan chose the Boathouse Row location after seeing the marina setting lit pink in years’ past. Rocking a custom pink-ribbon helmet, Meagan was photographed riding the feature in the nights leading up to October 1. The ride and stunning imagery will help Meagan raise awareness for breast cancer research and the hope of ultimately finding a cure.

“As a passion of mine, I’m really excited to raise awareness of breast cancer,” said Ethell, who has won six World Championships, ”I want to thank the city of Philadelphia and Boathouse Row for helping with the project.”

Meagan-ethell-breast-cancer-2jpg

Boathouse Row was the selected venue not only because of its picturesque nature, but because of the organizations that call this area home. Ethell’s ride was partly inspired by WeCanRow Philly, a community of breast cancer survivors aiming to help those affected regain their activity and energy levels. WeCanRow Philly also connects these women with others who have undergone similar experiences, and bonds them together through a healthy and exhilarating activity along Boathouse Row.

The 22-year old Orlando native has worked to raise money, awareness, and help survivors of breast cancer for years, including as a spokeswoman for Boarding for Breast Cancer (B4BC), and teaching survivors in her hometown how to wakeboard every year. Those interested in standing by Meagan as she works to support, advocate, and eradicate this deadly disease can do so by donating to Boarding for Breast Cancer, or by joining B4BC’s 13th annual ‘Skate the Coast’ event on October 25th, and encouraging your community to skate, bike, or roll around your neighborhood for Breast Cancer Prevention. B4BC also encourages those participants to tag @b4bc and #feelinit4b4bc to continue their goal. Additionally, Meagan and B4BC will be auctioning off her helmet to raise money for the cause, with Red Bull matching the donation.

Lucy Interview

When did you start wakeboarding ?

Who’s your first hero?

Steve Irwin

What is your favourite movie ?

Hot Rod

What is your breakfast of champion ?

A banana, coconut/almond milk and RAW protein powder smoothie is my go to breakfast beafore a day of riding.

Tacos or Pizza ?

If we’re talking soft tacos then i choose tacos, but if we’re talking hard tacos then i choose pizza !

Cable or Boat ?

Cable riding but i do really love boat riding too, I just don’t get the opportunity to go boat riding very often.

Your admirable quality ?

Very strong minded (sometimes a little too much hehe)

lucy-st-jack-1

Your bigget regret ?

Not starting wakeboarding earlier. Wakeboarding has had such a HUGE positive impact on my life !

Your musical genius ?

Ziggy Alberts ! His voice smoothes my soul.

Your most satisfying purchase ?

Hmm that’s a hard one because i hold a lot of appreciation and satisfaction for everything that i purchase, as i don’t earn a lot of money and i have to save up to purchase anything new. But if i had to choose i’d have to say my Ronix RXT binding because they’re so light and comfortable to ride in.

Your health concerns ?

Lyme Disease and Endometriosis.

Your advice to people dealing with chronic illness ?

DON’T FORGET TO KEEP LIVING !
When dealing with a chronic ilness it’s easy to get trapped in this negative frame of mind where you don’t know how to not be sick anymore and you become too scared to get out and live your life because you might be bed ridden for days afterwards if you push yourself too hard. I cannot express enough how much a strong and positive mindset changes everything.

As soon as you switch your mindset and believe that you can achieve the things that you want to, you will ! Yes it’s going to be scary and yes you might struggle at first, but you will also thrive and become stronger mentally and physically once you push through that sickness boundary that’s been holding you back !

Since i started wakeboarding it has had such a huge positive impact on my health, mentally and physically. I am the strongest i’ve ever been ! I will admit that sometimes i go a little too hard and fatigue myself… but it’s all apart of learning your boundaries and knowing when to push yourself and when to rest your body (which i’m still learning).

Cheers !

Thank you so much for this opportunity !
I really hope to reach out to people dealing with chronic ilness and help to inspire them to keep living life to the fullest !

For those who don’t know you, can you give us a bit of background info?

I grew up on the beach in South-East England and after leaving school, I gained my sailing and windsurfing instructors certificates and proceeded to work a number of seasonal contracts on the beach and in the mountains in Greece, France and Portugal. I moved to Australia in 2011 thinking I was going to spend a year down under before starting a “real job” and getting on with “real life responsibilities”. I ended up staying in Australia and it is now where I call home. It’s tough with the rest of my family and friends living on the other side of the world, but I do love it in Australia.

I learned how to surf and I got into the cable wakeboarding scene in 2012. Most of my weekends have been spent at the cable parks or in the ocean ever since.

Lauren-Hilder-Darling-unleashed-wake-mag

Why wakeboard?

My brother, Neal, used to kitesurf and traveled to some pretty epic locations

with it. For training, he and his mates would head to the cable parks in the UK and South Africa to learn and practice their tricks. That was the first time I’d really seen cable wakeboarding. Due to my seasonal contracts, I didn’t get into the sport until I moved to Australia.

I recently read a post from surfer, Leah Dawson, (aka @leahloves) where she explained that “surfing is a gift of a constant learning game, offering life lessons simultaneously”. I feel the same with wakeboarding. It is an alternative outlet for self-improvement. You are constantly learning about yourself. When you figure out the right thought patterns, what makes you tick, the opportunities to improve your riding are endless.

I wakeboard because I love the never- ending challenge of learning new tricks, making the tricks I already know better, and to keep feeling that new trick stoke. I also wakeboard because it’s fun. At the end of the day, if you’re not enjoying what you’re doing, why do it?

Malin Overby by Karen Button and Charlotte Bryant

Malin is a real talented wakeboarder and wakeskater, she’s born in Sweden, but spend the most of is time shredding in Australia as her new Home base now. She’s also a world traveler, visiting all the famous spots of the world during the year and share her passion in the mean time. When you have more than 11,990 Fans on your Facebook athlete page , you definitely attract some attention not !

How did you get in to Wakeskating and Wakeboarding?
I grew up snowboarding in Sweden so when I moved to Australia I needed to find a substitute for that. Initially I started Wakeboarding. I enjoyed how I could translate tricks from my snowboarding onto the water. I also have always loved to skateboard so this and Wakeboarding eventually lead me to Wakeskating.

Whats been happening for you in Australia in the past year ?
I got an old winch off of a friend and bought a new motor. Another friend helped me install this motor, I painted the frame pink, and started to Wakeskate. I have been hitting so many great winch spots around the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast.

Where do you normally ride in Australia when you don’t winch?
At my friend Cam Prest’s 2.0 pool gap setup in the Sunshine Coast. There are 4 of us who have been riding together pretty much every weekend and I have really started to appreciate the good vibes and fun times that Wakeskating has to offer. Its a very social sport because you always need at least 2 people every time you ride – one that is driving the 2.0 and one that is riding.

What do you think of contests? Do you get stoked?
I get pretty stoked on them. You get a little extra pumped up because you want to do good, and everyone’s there, and maybe there’s money. I get a little nervous, too sometimes but it’s always cool because it’s usually a new thing to ride, maybe a new feature.

malin-overby-skating

How was last years Travel and competitions?
Last year was a big year for me I was traveling a lot and got a chance to ride many different parks which have helped me improve as a rider. I also got to know many awesome people. I was in Thailand to film with a friend for a month during the rain season and got a chance to wake skate in really uncrowded parks which helps since there always is a lot of swimming and walking included in the wake skate learning process. After that I went straight to Taiwan where I had my first wake skate competition and won. After that, in December last year, I went to Mexico for the World Championships. Wakeskating and Wakeboarding have definitely been taking me to some pretty cool places.

What have you been up to this summer?
I have been riding and filming in Valdosta Wake Compound and Blackwater Junction for the last 5 months. It has been an awesome experience and I met some really cool people along the way. Im also super stoked that I got a chance to ride Reed Hansen’s pool gap at the Battle Falls outside Orlando which is now my new favorite spot.

Lisa Andersen, The Wave

Lisa Andersen 49 years old , 4X Surfing world champion show us a new way to ride is Board , and how to climb a massive wave with this insane advertise made by N°7 a famous cosmetic brand ….

More about Lisa Andersen

Lisa Andersen (born March 8, 1969, in Ormond Beach, Florida)[1] is a four-time world surfing champion from the United States. She won four successive world titles from 1994 to 1997. She was named ASP’s Rookie of the Year in 1987. She was named as one of the 100 “Greatest Sportswomen of the Century” by Sports Illustrated for Women. She was named the “1998 Female Athlete of the Year” by Conde Nast Sports for Women magazine. She is a six-time winner of Surfer Magazine’s Readers Poll. In 2002, she was inducted into the Surfer’s Hall of Fame.[2] In 2004, she was inducted into the Surfing Walk of Fame (located in Huntington Beach, California) as that year’s Woman of the Year.[3]

She won the US amateur surfing title in 1987 and turned professional the following year. From 1994 to 1997 she won successive women’s world titles before injury forced her to stop competing. She returned to the sport in 2000. She is married to Tim Shannon and has two children, Erica and Mason.

Lisa Andersen began surfing at the age of 13 in Ormond Beach, Florida. At this time, she was the only girl surfing in her hometown. Indeed, in the early 80’s women’s surfing was underground, and surfing in general was seen as a man’s sport. However, Andersen worked hard to impress her peers with her smooth but aggressive style. At 16, because of her parents disapproval of her love of surfing, she decided to run away to Huntington Beach, California to pursue her passion and train with the best surfers in America. Subsequently, she entered amateur competitions and won 35 National Scholastic Surfing Association trophies in eight months and, later, the US Championships at Sebastien Inlet in 1987. After this victory, she became a professional surfer and finished her first year on the tour ranked 12th and was elected Rookie of the Year. She won her first pro event in 1990 in Australia, but she struggled with remaining focused throughout the competitive season with the multiple contests over the span of a surfing year. She later found improved concentration after the birth of her first child, daughter Erika. And only a month after giving birth, she reached the final in Japan.

After making competitive history as a single mom, Andersen’s persona soon became iconic, transforming women’s surfing more than any surfer before her. She knocked the beach bunny image aside and edged out the unfeminine stereotype often plaguing female athletes. Andersen was unique in that she remained feminine and graceful while displaying an aggressive energy that would set new standards for female surfers. Lisa didn’t simply change how women surf but also how they are perceived. She led droves of young girls to the sport. She also played a major role along with her sponsor Roxy in changing women’s beach fashion with the development of the women’s boardshort.

After battling back injuries and giving birth to her second child, Mason, Andersen semi retired in 2001 and moved into a global brand ambassador role with Roxy. She is the subject of Nick Carroll’s biography “Fearlessness”.

While women surfers still trail behind men in terms of pay and coverage, there is no doubt that female surfing would have missed a crucial burst of progress without the style and performance juggernaut of Lisa Andersen.
