Ben Howells interview by Phil Sirech

I’ve been involved with filmmaking and photography for over 15 years. I first starting playing with
my Grandfather’s video cameras at a young age and my Dad’s old Pentax 35mm SLRs, then getting hold of my first MiniDV handy cam at the age of 16. I really don’t miss logging footage from all those tapes! Then it led to the modern world of mirrorless cameras, DSLRs, drones and so on.

Hi Ben. Introduce yourself in a few words:

Idiot with a camera.

Tell us more how the idea came to create PILCHARD PRODUCTIONS?

My Granddad on my Mum’s side of the family did a lot of filming, with all the different formats through the years; 8mm, VHS, MiniDV. He was into making short videos on all kinds of different subjects and sending us family films from visits and sometimes we would borrow his old video cameras too. My Dad is also into photography and had a few Pentax 35mm cameras which I was always borrowing/breaking a lot. So using cameras, taking photos and making films was a pretty normal thing.

I had a paper round and worked in a few pubs washing dishes in my early teens, saved enough to eventually buy an old Pentax Super A from 1985 off eBay to start taking photos on 35mm, and a Sony TRV16 MiniDV handy cam for filming. I was about 16 or 17 at the time.

What art form do you like to put forward in a video? The trick, the colors or the landscape?

It depends. The simplest and smallest things can look amazing with the correct approach. Mostly I like to focus on creativity and style in the rider, not so much big tricks. Vibrant colors and a beautiful landscape are cool of course, but a cloudy day in an urban setting can be really fun too. It all depends on the context.

Also, not too much slow motion, or transitions. Both are amazing used correctly, but get overused way too much in my opinion, often just to hide lazy/bad camerawork and lack of narrative or creativity in editing.

pilchard-production-ben-howellsIs there a place in the world where you would like to shoot in particular?

Definitely Folgefonna Glacier in Norway, the summer midnight sunsets there create amazing colors and Emil Fossheim, the park manager, builds amazing jumps to shoot.

As for wakeboarding, early mornings and sunsets at Liquid Leisure are epic! Anywhere I can hang with friends, and being able to go surf or skate in between wakeboarding is a big plus – Bali is great for that.

Who do you usually shoot?

Friends mostly, that way everyone is more relaxed and it’s way lot more fun! Dominik Gührs, Lior Sofer, Nick Davies, Im San, William Klang, these guys always guarantee a fun trip! Of course there’s so many more though.

What kind of camera do you use for video and photo?

The camera I use isn’t important, it’s how it’s used. Fancy lenses, drones and stabilizers help of course but creativity and imagination are more important.

Do you make videos of other sports?

Yes! Actually I really want to shoot more mountain biking and motocross at the moment. Also a little bit of surf, skate…other things I do beside wakeboarding. Sometimes it feels like I have too many hobbies.

It can be fun to film all kinds of different things, that I’d usually have no interest in, not just sports. Actually I’m getting bored of making and watching rider edits now, I like to do a few still each year but I’m trying to think of interesting concepts and subjects instead. I have a few friends who are actresses living and working in LA, it would be interesting to go check that scene out…although I don’t think I would fit in that well!

When art meets design: limited edition Fatboy items created by Dutch artist Jordy van den Nieuwendijk.

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of Fatboy’s iconic bean bag, the Original, Fatboy has teamed up with Dutch artist Jordy van den Nieuwendijk.

Fatboy has always had a keen eye for design, art and creative applications. Functionality and usability play a key role in the development of new products, while colours and shapes are other strong points that have Fatboy’s full focus.

When looking at the works of Dutch artist Jordy van den Nieuwendijk (1985), colours and shapes immediately draw the attention. As a painter Jordy creates a chaotic blend of motion and freedom, delivered with knowing wit, humour and tradition. His style is known for primary colours and big, recognizable shapes, while playing with the white of the canvas.

When art meets design: limited edition Fatboy items created by Dutch artist Jordy van den Nieuwendijk. During his career Jordy worked with renowned brands such as Hermes and Ace & Tate. His energetic and direct style illustrates his work as bold and surprising, exactly what makes Jordy and Fatboy perfect partners for a great collaboration.

To mark the 20th anniversary of the Original, the fresh team-up with Jordy pays tribute to Fatboy’s world famous, iconic bean bag. This special collaboration will lead to the unique decoration of a Fatboy Original and a specially designed carpet that will reveal some clever hidden messages.

Nico Von Lerchenfeld and his Peak

“If you’re looking for a board that is ready to bounce off the water, the Peak may be the board for you. Don’t take it from us, take it from Nico himself… “I personally think it has the best pop of any board out there.” Built with a full wood core for durability AND a more spring loaded flex with rebound. The unique single concave hull shape, mid body channels, and a concave beveled edge allows this board to be ridden finless and still hold a solid edge. With the LF exclusive liquid rails and grind base, this board can take a beating on any feature. Adding to the already impressive flex pattern of this board, the FlexTrack system will have you more connected and in control than ever before. You won’t need to Imagine Happiness, you will Experience Happiness.”

Jake Mansbridge is a 24 year-old graduate who lives in Staffordshire, England. He enjoys producing artwork in a variety of media, not only with traditional methods such as pencil and pen, but digitally, using various software such as Adobe Illustrator. Jake currently markets his commercial graphic designs through the international website Red Bubble and India-based website Cupick, which prints the designs onto a range of products. One of his predominant collections, dubbed ‘Dumplings’, features a recognizable human form in a range of different symbolic designs. Through his Blinker & Cam mini-comic series, Jake addresses current affairs in a satirical tone by following the thoughts of two likeable sentient security camera characters – ‘Blinker‘ and ‘Cam’. He has also done some commissioned graphic design work for clients, which includes recently producing several album artworks for French band ‘Milan’.

Jake has always been fascinated by biology and evolution and this passion has been a major inspiration for much of his artwork. His parents remember his ability at a very early age to draw animals accurately from memory alone. At the age of 15, Jake took part in a competition to design a creature for the ITV UK television series ‘Primeval’ and was chosen as runner up out of the 5000 entries. He went on to complete a BSc (Hons) in Zoology at the University of Derby, England, and whilst studying, his interest in producing artwork inspired by xenobiology and astrobiology flourished. His knowledge in this area allows him to design fictitious organisms which reflect biological principles, allowing them to appear thoroughly realistic. Through this theme, he hopes to encourage the viewer to appreciate the complexity and peculiarity of some of the real organisms on Earth. In 2013, Jake displayed a collection of his work with this theme as the featured student artist at an art exhibition in Dunphy’s Gallery in Burton-on-Trent, Staffordshire. This was the first time any of his work was seen by the public. Up until this event, Jake had modestly kept his artwork a very private passion.

His collection of artwork based on the theme of xenobiology forms part of a greater conceptual project which includes short stories, contextual literature and graphic artwork. The different aspects of the project link tightly to develop a complete picture of the fictional universe. The short stories, collectively entitled ‘Stories of The Wastelands, The Spacelands & All In- Betweens’ is a growing collection, several stories of which are currently available for Kindle on Amazon.

Jake Mansbridge

As well as art and writing, Jake continues to dedicate time to his passion for music. He is currently in a band called ‘Maxwell Avenue’ and performs original music in and around the Midlands. Maxwell Avenue’s music can be found on SoundCloud under the username ‘MaxwellAvenueOfficial’.

Jake’s artwork can be found online through his Facebook page Jake McCarthy Mansbridge Art & Design and on Twitter as @JMMDesign.
He also welcomes the odd email from interested folk at: Jake.Mansbridge@gmail.com.

DISCOVER THE DRAWING OF ROBERT BOBBY HEDGES

Born in Atlanta in 1977, Robert Hedges began drawing at an early age. This self-taught artist uses mixed ink mediums such as Copic, Prisma, and calligraphy inks in unique ways to create his whimsical, moody images of which often feature clever characters and pop-culture icons. This former radio disc jockey is also the author of the novel, Sweet Serene and has been featured in several art galleries in the Atlanta area for the past two years. His favorite overheard critique was, “I love it because it seems unfinished.“

robert bobby hedges

In Hedges’ seemingly haphazard style lies his work’s charm. Surprisingly, this rushed or “unfinished“ style takes time and a fair amount of luck to perfect. Robert often goes through several versions of a piece until the random will of the inks suits his mood. Rest assured, though. Each scrapped piece is immediately recycled. Until the perfect interpretation is achieved.

robert bobby hedges

The artist will tell you he is inspired by music, literature, and his own twisted sense of humor. However, looking into each individual piece, there is clearly more going on. Subtle yet expected. It’s not uncommon to find seemingly hidden objects and texts in his pieces if you look hard enough.

In his spare time, Robert is an avid reader, a mediocre guitarist, an interpretive basket weaver and an experimental unicyclist.

BIZMUT HANDMADE

Illustrator, painter and graphic designer, the creative process is always the same according to Christophe Cabanes AKA Bizmut. Starting with illustrations drawn in pencil, it is a handmade style. After more than 20 years of skateboarding and snowboarding, it was natural that Bizmut evolved into the environment of extreme sports as an artist. He worked for 10 years with big brands like DC, Quiksilver, Electric, Billabong, Yamaha, and Dakine.

bizmut

The production of paintings for exhibitions for animation workshops in art schools is an illustration in his chosen field that this artist excels at everything he touches. His style is similar to that of a comic book. It is corrosive, offbeat with a rock-n-roll influence. He loves to explore the magnitude of mother nature and the human being in all its complexity. A universe that can be summarized in a few words: “Born to be Wild”…

More About BIZMUT

Interview with Bizmut, a talented artist located in the South of France. Art and Ride!

When I was in France recently for my last art show, I met a cool and talented artist based in the city where my mother lives.
We met and had a couple of beers, while talking about our experiences in the art scene.
The illustrator and painter who worked for many brands of the board culture was also about to travel to Bali.
I gave him some advices about the life on the island of gods, and we drank more beers.
More about the French artist Christophe Cabannes aka Bizmut.

PLEASE INTRODUCE YOURSELF
I’m Christophe Cabannes aka Bizmut, illustrator, artist and graphic designer in freelance, living in Biarritz (France).
I started skateboarding and snowboarding about 20 years ago, and i have now the privilege to mix my 2 passions: art and ride.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR WORK?
My artwork fit between the movements of “New figuration” and “Lowbrow”.
I like representing figurative and surrealist things, with flashy colors and some messages: seeking madness, adrenalyne, truth, justice, faith…
My themes of reflexion are human condition, natural elements, earlier civilizations, esotericism, board-culture…
There is a small feature in my work, i often use forms of black lightning shearing the subject and giving to the work a sense of power.

PLEASE SHARE WITH US YOUR WORKING PROCESS
I think that drawing take a major place in my work: this is the beginning, the based…come after colors, techniq, style…on paper, canvas or computer.
After having spend a lot of time to paint and organize exhibitions, i now devote much more collaborations with snowboarding brands like DC shoes, Billabong outerwear, Electric visual…
In these cases, the only constraints are to use the same colors of their next collections, and to comply with the chosen theme. After i have a total liberty to create illustrations and decos.

HOW DOES YOUR ENVIRONMENT INFLUENCE YOUR ART?
In my youth, I lived in the middle of the forest and wildlife, and summer and winter, I followed the seasons by going to the ocean or the mountains.
That’s why i love drawing natural elements like mountains, waves, wild animals, vegetation…

WHO ARE YOUR INFLUENCES?
Ride, music, art, friends, actuality…all and nothing !
I really appreciate the work of:

  • Craola
  • Jeff Soto
  • Jeremy Fish
  • Skinner
  • Broken Fingaz, etc…

ANY LAST WORD?
I’m working on a new exhibition, something very wild which refers to our past civilizations…paintings and custom sculptures… well, stay tuned !
And big thanks for this interview ! I really like your recent work with all these characters with tribal masks, intense vegetation… I think we are in the same approch : “Back to the roots” !

Graphic designers, illustrators and screen printers, Alice & Valoo created the brand The Female Arsonists (Les Pétroleuses). Armed with cans of paint and wooden frameworks, they give life to poetic and wacky animals.

les-petroleuses-tshirtles-petroleuses-carnet

From the basement of their workshop in Toulouse, the two assistants adorn tote bags, t-shirts, postcards and notebooks with their drawings embellished with their slogans with punk and quirky influences. Born from a common desire to launch a creative project around serigraphy (a technical print using a stencil), they create a limited-series bestiary where each model has a unique touch, thanks to the artisanal process. Their graphic style causes a universe where Valoo’s vivacity and Alice’s sweetness are wonderfully combined. The reference to Christian-Jaque’s movie is obviously intentional. The blonde one, Brigitte Bardot, and the brunette, Claudia Cardinale, are two women with sturdy characters and the film tells the story of a criminal association!

The Female Arsonists (Les Pétroleuses) sell their creations in creators’ markets, shops and exhibitions. They weave their network through France and do not intend to stop there!

Hi Peter, can you introduce yourself in few words ?
Hi Unleashed, my name is Peter Valfridsson, and I’m an action sports photographer from Sweden.

First of all, can you tell us how you came to take photos?
I have always been interested in art and creating things. It started with music and painting when I was young. Then one day, 15 years ago, I decided to buy a camera, and that was the best decision I have ever made. Photography combines a lot of creative aspects and is very social which is perfect for me.
First you get the idea of a photo, you find or sometimes create the scenery, and finally you take the photo. It ́s the process I love from planning to shooting, and I am always looking for new spots and ideas.

What art form do you like to put forward in a photo? The trick? The colors? Landscape?
I love to create a story about my photos so would like to put the scenery forward. There are so many good photographers out there, so to be unique you have to create a good scene and story. I also like to shoot with flashes to bring a good light composition into the picture. The finest word I ever heard about my photos was when a friend’s older mother told me, “I love to watch your photos because they are so beautiful.” She does not know what wakeboarding is but can enjoy the story and composition. So when the rider is satisfied and your friend’s mother likes the photo you know it ́s a good one. Thats my goal with a photo, to create good art and I love to create it with wakeboarding and skiing.

Is there a place in Sweden where you like to shoot in particular?
Yes of course in my own cable park, Vasteras Cable Park. There is also a really beautiful 2.0 cable in Gothenburg, Lagunen, with crystal blue water! But most fun is to go out with a winch and find a unique spot. Sweden is an amazing country with a lot of beautiful nature. When the seasons change the colors are beautiful.

Who do you usually shoot?
I like to shoot people with the right attitude, happy people always portray good energy in the photos. We have a lot of good riders in Sweden, and to mention some of them; William Klang, Jeremia Hoppe, Christian Forssten and Carro Djupsjö. I think the most important thing is to have fun.
What kind of camera, flash and radio do you use?
I use a Canon 5D MARK III, and 3 Elinchrome Ranger
flashes. The new transmitter from Elinchrome with Hyper- sync is awesome!

Do you take photos of other sports? Do you also do fashion, weddings, and other stuff?
I also love to shoot freeskiing. In Sweden you have five months shooting wakeboarding and the rest of the time it’s winter so it’s a good combination with wakeboarding and skiing. They are also my biggest passions, skiing and wakeboarding. I have been shooting some catalogues and weddings but it is not my priority.
Do you wakeboard too? Do you find it frustrating sometimes when you see other riders having fun while you’re taking pictures?
Of course I ride! It’s the best thing with everything to combine your passions with photography. I really think you need to practice the sport yourself to make good photos. You need to know when it ́s the right time to take the photo and whats going on out there. I have seen so many good photographers who try to shoot wakeboarding for example and it looks bad because they don ́t know how to ride. I have some kind of letter combination (ADD) so I don ́t like to sit still therefore it ́s a good option to take photos when you rest from riding.

Finally, do you have some important tips to give to those who want to progress on 3W photographies?
Yes go out there and practice the sports you want to take photos of. Learn what happens and watch the riders before shooting them so you can capture their own style in a good way. Some riders will be better in rails and some at kickers and the angle is the next important thing. Try out the spot from different angles before you start shooting. Be patient. Sometimes it takes time to get the right shoot. So it’s important that the riders have the right attitude and you have the same goals for the photo. And don ́t forget to have fun.

Do you have any special congurations?
No, not really. It depends on the weather and light. But I like to use flashes to boost the foreground from the background.
Thanks for your time Peter, if you want to say something else, go for it!
I would like to thank all my friends for always being positive about my crazy ideas and always supporting me with the photos. If you want to see more of my photos just follow me on instagram @picsbypewe
