The home of action sports: 10 years of MASH

True to the motto “coming home”, the Munich Action Sports Heroes will be returning to the Olympic Park from 2 to 4 August, transforming the venue once again into a world of high-class sports and cultural diversity.

10 years ago – in 2014 – MASH celebrated its premiere. Since then, the action sports festival has become an unmissable event in the Olympic Park. All Munich locals and action sports fans should mark this year’s dates in their calendars, as the 2024 edition will again feature spectacular contests in BMX, skateboarding, wakeboarding, and street dance, as well as the revamped MASH Fest, which for the first time will see Germany’s best 3×3 basketball players competing for the national cup.

“We proudly look back on 10 years of  Munich MASH 2024 and are very much looking forward to this year’s edition at the beginning of August. It is in the DNA of this successful Olympic Park event to offer something new and surprising every time, to feature elite sports and to showcase the action sports lifestyle in a unique way. Over the past decade, MASH has developed into a highlight in the international event calendar that is highly regarded by the athletes and loved by the audience. It will be the same again in 2024,” says Olympic Park Director Marion Schöne, adding, “The fact that we have been able to develop and establish this event in such a way is in no small part down to the support of the City of Munich and many strong partners, whom I would like to express my thanks to.” Munich’s Sports Mayor Verena Dietl says: “Action sports are very close to my heart, and as the state capital we support these sports in many ways. Considering what an event highlight MASH has become over the last 10 years and how well received the event is, especially among the younger generation, any support has been worthwhile. I’m greatly looking forward to this year’s edition and three days full of excitement and enthusiasm.”

A record 92,000 visitors flocked to the park last year and were inspired by the exceptional atmosphere. The sporting action picks up seamlessly in August 2024 – the public can get in the spirit for these four contests:

Skateboarding is the bedrock in the MASH context. International athletes have been inspiring audiences with their skills since 2015. This year, they will provide that outdoor pool feeling. Red Bull Pool Drop brings the most talented and creative international skateboarders from the street and bowl disciplines to Munich. The name says it all: The athletes are allowed to present their skateboard performance on a brand-new swimming pool-style set-up on the Olympic Lake. Familiar pool elements will turn the swimmers’ paradise into a skateboard paradise. International world elite will meet local heroes.

Athletes will experience a revival in the BMX contest. Just like in 2017, they will move their contest to Hans-Jochen-Vogel-Platz and show off their skills on the spine ramp, surrounded by crowds of spectators who could hardly be any closer to the action. The spine ramp is the most dynamic and one of the most prestigious events in BMX freestyle. Those who excel here have the best prerequisites for BMX freestyle park – the discipline that will be contested at the Olympics for a second time this year in Paris. With an area of 250 square meters and a height of up to four meters, it is the perfect “playground” for the 12 BMX stars competing in Munich.

Wakeboarding has been part of the MASH program since 2016 and once again promises plenty of action on a spectacular set-up on the Olympic Lake. In addition to the individual women’s and men’s events, there will once again be a team contest. Julia Rick, “newcomer” Nils Ritzmann, Nico von Lerchenfeld (all three from Germany) and last year’s winners Pedro Caldas (BRA) and Lisa Baloo (ISR) are among those who have already registered for this year’s contest.

The street dance contest at the Theatron will be returning for a second stint. The dancers made their official competition debut in 2023, dancing their way into visitors’ hearts and proving that street dance and MASH are a match made in heaven. Two events are also on the agenda this year: International Breaking 2vs2 Mixed and International All Style Mixed 7-to-smoke. Both categories will be contested by invited international top dancers as well as performers qualifying via pre-selection.

From the very beginning, MASH has been a top-class, international sporting event, but not just that. The secret of its success has always been the combination of thrilling action sports and a complementary program highlighting the lifestyle and culture of the scene. For its 10th anniversary, things will be no different – and even better: themed “coming home”, the revamped MASH Fest will embrace the visitors with plenty of joie de vivre. A casual chill-out area is perfect for lingering and relaxing, while a variety of activities such as skateboarding, dance and graffiti workshops promise an unforgettable experience. From tasty treats and music to artistic performances, there will be something to tickle all the senses. The ING 3×3 Champions Trophy, the German Cup in 3×3 basketball, has been added to the program as a new side event this year, and the legendary after-party on Saturday evening is not to be missed either. The MASH Fest simply provides the perfect setting for guests to come together, get creative, relax, and take in all the action in one place.

Guenther Oka (USA) rocks Wakeboard Rail & Air by MASH

Felix Georgii wins Best Trick Contest

He may be just 19 years old, but right now Guenther Oka is the man to beat in the world of freestyle wakeboard. That proved the case once again this Sunday in Munich’s Olympic Park as the American took victory in the Wakeboard Rail & Air by MASH in front of 20,000 fans.

However, Oka didn’t have things all his own way. “Even in the heats the level tricks was just crazy, and things got even closer in the Superfinal. I am really happy to have won,” explained Oka after an impressive performance which saw him combine technical skills on the rails with huge amplitude on the big air kicker.

He was closely followed in second place by 21-year-old Aaron Gunn. Despite going into the event as one of the favourites for the win, the Australian was forced to settle for second spot on the podium. Third place went to last year’s winner, Dominik Hernler from Austria.

Germany’s Felix Georgii just missed out on qualifying for the Superfinal but was nevertheless happy with his performance after winning the Best Trick Contest with a Switch Onefooted Mute 540. “For me MASH is the biggest contest of the year with a perfect set-up. I knew right from the start that it would be a great event. The atmosphere here at the Olympic Lake and the huge crowds of fans cheering us on make this contest unique,” said the 24-year-old.

His compatriot Nico von Lerchenfeld, second in 2016, was eliminated in the Knockout Round by Aaron Gunn

Felix Georgii the local hero and the big winner of the 2017 edition told us the event from his point of view :

“On my way to Munich I got a call from the UNIT guys. They asked me if I could check on the Mash setup. Nico von Lerchenfeld, who was supposed to check in, couldn’t make it in time due to a car break down. I wasn’t excited at all because last year’s setup needed so much adjustments before it finally worked…”

The countdown to MASH 2017  is on!

 MASH 2017:

The countdown to MASH is on! In just two weeks – from 23 to 25 June – Munich’s Olympic Park will welcome the world’s top action sports stars and a huge number of fans for the fourth edition of MUNICH MASH. Preparations for the event are in full swing. The start lists for the first stop of the STREET LEAGUE SKATEBOARDING NIKE SB WORLD TOUR and the WAKEBOARD RAIL & AIR are already complete, with just one place left to fill for the BMX SPINE RAMP contest. And the program of side events and activities accompanying the action at MASH is growing by the day. Time for an update!

STREET LEAGUE SKATEBOARDING NIKE SB WORLD TOUR

The athletes competing in this year’s Street League Skateboarding Nike SB World Tour have now been confirmed. After two days of thrilling action, Yuto Horigome and Dashawn Jordan booked their places on the World Tour at the SLS Nike SB Pro Open in Barcelona and will now join SLS pros like SLS World Champion 2016, Shane O’Neill, Evan Smith, Nyjah Huston, Ishod Wair, Chris Cole and Sean Malto in Munich’s Olympic Ice Stadium on Saturday 24 June for the first stop of the STREET LEAGUE SKATEBOARDING NIKE SB WORLD TOUR. “The energy and support from the fans in the sold-out Olympic Ice Stadium was one of the absolute highlights of the Tour last year,” comments SLS President Brian Atlas. The organisers and fans will be looking to replicate that atmosphere this year as the top 30 skateboarders in the world do battle in Munich. Tickets for the contest are already on sale via the MASH Ticket Shop. Several categories of tickets are available, including the 4Friends&more Ticket. For more information visit www.streetleague.com

WAKEBOARD RAIL & AIR

“I am totally stoked. Everything worked out perfectly today. And on top of that the atmosphere at the Olympic Lake was really cool,” said Dominik Hernler (AUT) after his victory at last year’s MASH Wakeboard Contest, where he claimed top spot ahead of local heroes Dominik Gührs and Nico von Lerchenfeld. He will be looking to replicate his win at the WAKEBOARD RAIL & AIR 2017, but it won’t be easy. On Friday 23 June and Sunday 25 June the top three athletes from last year will take on some of the best in the world, including 19-year-old Guenther Oka from the USA – who had a super strong year in 2016 – and 21-year-old Aaron Gunn from Australia – a two-time world champion in his own right. Among the other riders on the 8 June 2017start line will be the 22-year-old American John Dreiling (3rd overall in the Wake Park World Series 2016) as well as MASH veteran William Klang from Sweden and the German duo of Bene Tremmel and Alexander Aulbach. If you thought the action was extreme last year, things are set to get even more intense in 2017 with a new Big Air set-up featuring rails and other obstacles. Get ready to be amazed as the world’s top 16 wakeboard athletes take to the water for a contest packed with sick tricks and huge airtime on the Olympic Lake! BMX SPINE RAMP

The BMX SPINE RAMP contest is set to make its MASH debut on Friday 23 June (Best Trick) and Saturday 24 June (Final) with a top international field of riders from eight countries. The mix of Quarter Pipe, Spine, Extension, Wall Ride and Sub Box makes the Spine Ramp one huge 250m2 playground up to five metres in height where the world’s best freestyle BMX pros will go head- to-head in front of a huge crowd on Coubertin Square. Among those lining up on the start line will be five-time X Games gold medallist Daniel Dhers (Venezuela/32 years) and the 22-year-old American Kevin Peraza, who won gold at the 2016 X Games. Other athletes to have confirmed their participation include Britain’s Jack Clark (22 years), who won last year’s Boardmasters event, and 28-year-old Tom Justice (28), third at Boardmasters 2016, as well as Ben Wallace (30), who has twice won silver at the X Games. Konstantin Andreev (24) is one of Russia’s top freestyle BMX riders and will be joined by 27-year-old Dutch rider Daniel Wedemeijer, Croatia‘s Marin Rantes (21) and the Czech “trick machine” Michael Beran (27). One thing is for sure: German BMX stars Paul Thölen (18 years old from Viersen), Timo Schulze (18 years old from Gelsenkirchen) and Tobias Freigang (22 years old from Wachtendonk) will have their work cut out to achieve a podium place but will be fighting hard against the crème de la crème of the international elite. Click here to see a full list of the athletes taking part.

MASH FEST

No other event embodies the spirit of action sports like MASH. As well as the sporting events there will be plenty of side events and activities going on throughout the festival – from havens of peace and quiet to get away from it all to rocking parties with plenty of different types of music for all tastes.

Access to the MASH FEST is free for everyone. This area combines art, culture and infotainment and is a central meeting point for visitors to MASH.
