Drone Session

This time, Niklas Scherer, a wakeboarder/drone pilot from Southern Germany, started filming riders at his local cable park with his racing drone, thinking it would open up new perspectives for wakeboarding and promote the sport. After some planning, he figured out how to make the drone waterproof and float in case of a crash over water so he could fly at least kind of freely… and without the risk of dunking his quad in the middle of a lake any moment. In that way, the past weekend he got the chance to team up with and film a very talented and promising young rider at his home spot, Rico Schuhmacher.

He’s only 15, started wakeboarding 3 years ago, and does not have a sponsor yet. Niklas edit is what he came up with to showcase some of Rico’s riding at their local Park. In less than an hour of filming, Rico absolutely ripped the park to shreds… but go see for yourself !

Ever since I’ve moved up to the Carolina’s people have been raving about the Outer Banks.

“Dude you haven’t been to the outer banks yet?”

“You gotta go, the place is a surfers paradise…”

“It’s like the Hawaii of the East Coast!”

“You’ll never find water deep enough for that boat.”

Ha! It was all hearsay and there was only one way to discover the true potential of this place! GO and see for myself! I reached out the Neil Hutchinson (our East Coast and Caribbean rep) who had the idea to take the trip and spread the love for our new line of Hover Glide hydrofoils! One of our biggest dealers in the country, Real Watersports, is located right in the heart of the action with amazing kite conditions out back, PLUS amazing surf conditions out front! We set a date and assembled a crew of our favorite surfers/foilers/ etc. and surprisingly everyone was available and ready to rip! Enter pro surfers Brett Barley, Ben Gravy, James Jenkins and pro kiter Reed Brady, plus all-star Slingshot film-maker Steffen Vollert.

When we arrived at Watermen’s Retreat on the water’s edge next-door to Real we were blown away by the facilities. Talk about high-class livin’!  The accommodations were next-level, and the conditions were shaping up perfectly for the week! The following days were filled with endless activities including traditional surfing with the boys, foiling with Ben and Brett, dropping the boat into Oregon inlet and assembling the ultimate party wave, the ultimate tow-in session with Jenkins, and even learning to foil behind the kite, we ticked every box and then some, all in the matter of a few short days. We’re not sure if it’s always that EPIC, but we timed it right and the outer banks certainly delivered an amazing experience for all!

“Brian Grubb is always looking to innovate in wakeskating and the American took the sport to new territory with his drone tow ride down the Sava Bohinjka River in Slovenia. The New Hampshire native finally realised a dream he has had for years about taking wakeskating into the future with technology. He teamed up with Infineon Technologies to get an electric-powered quadcopter drone built that would be able to tow him down the idyllic crystal clear Alpine river, which flows deep in the mountains of Slovenia. The German company delivered a safe and reliable flying machine with a battery as powerful as 158 smartphones put together (1,5 kWh / 51,8 V / 30 Ah) and rotor blades stretching 80 centimetres in diameter. The impressive 24-kilogram machine could tow Grubb for 10 minutes straight and could even lift him in the air if needed with the 38-year-old completing a world first winch-to-drone handle pass as part of the project.”
