The Malibu WWA Rider Experience Central joined forces with Texas’ infamous Wake the Desert event bringing together the top amateurs and professional riders to celebrate Wake the Desert’s 20th Anniversary.

Recap

San Angelo

Hosted by the crew at Family Powersports, riders felt like rockstars behind the Malibu 25LSV and M235 all weekend long. Focused on rider development, the event began with Freeride Friday, giving competitors, family and friends the opportunity to hang out and learn from their favorite Malibu Pro athletes. Alongside Freeride Friday, Wake the Desert’s amateur wakesurf divisions hit the water laying down competition firsts and setting the pace for the rest of the weekend. Saturday’s WWA Regional Championships Central included all WWA amateur and Jr. Pro divisions along with Wake the Desert Outlaw semifinal rounds. The weekend wrapped up with Surf Gate Sunday where riders were able to experience the endless wave of Malibu’s world-class line of boats and take inspiration from today’s stars with the Wake the Desert Outlaw and Pro Wakesurf and Wakeboard Finals.

“We had a blast in Texas this weekend! It was great watching the next up and comers in wake interact with the Malibu Pro athletes and take inspiration from all of the talented riders who came to compete at the Malibu Rider Experience Central and Wake the Desert. We are so privileged to work with such great partners like Malibu Boats and Family Powersports, and we look forward to seeing everyone for the final U.S. stop in Virginia next weekend,” commented WWA Executive Director, Corrie Wilson.

In the Jr. Boy’s Beginner division, local Texan Kyle Bendele (TX) threw a huge H/S wake to wake indy grab to earn his first place finish and a score of 86.67. The picturesque waters and surrounding beauty of Lake Martin set the 2019 Nautique Southeast Regatta up to be an unforgettable weekend hosted by Nautique Boat Company, the World Wake Association (The WWA), and Russell Marine. Here are the WWA memories.

2019 Nautique Southeast Regatta

Nautique boat owners and the wake community came together at The Ridge Marina on Friday, June 28th to meet new owners, shake hands with old friends and fill the marina with the industry’s leading boats. The 6x Wakeboard Boat of the Year, the Super Air Nautique G23, pulled event attendees into a full day of family-friendly activities including private demos with Nautique Team athletes, educational sessions, and an all-discipline GromFest for the kids on Saturday. Saturday night kept the party going with a taste of the true south at the gorgeous Stables at Russell Crossroads for the Country-Western themed dinner and awards banquet. Sunday served as the perfect sendoff with more personalized time and memories made with the Nautique team.

“The first-ever Nautique Southeast Regatta was certainly one to remember. Nautiques of all ages filled Lake Martin for a great weekend on and off the water. Owners shared their passion for the worlds best towboats while being instructed by Team Nautique athletes throughout the days,” said Nautique President Greg Meloon.  “A special thanks to all of the Nautique families that joined us for this inaugural event!”

High fives and smiles

The high energy weekend started off with a golf tournament at Willow Point Golf & Country Club overlooking Lake Martin. Russell Marine golf team took the win with a total score of 8 under par. Upon making their way to check-in at The Ridge Marina, families didn’t waste any time hitting the water for their first private demos with Nautique Team athletes like Cory Teunissen, Shaun Murray, and Jodi Grassman. Nautique President Greg Meloon welcomed the group during the evening Grill and Chill paired with the backdrop of an Alabama sunset.

High-fives and smiles were seen all around on Saturday as Nautique owners and families had the opportunity to shred behind the legendary Super Air Nautique G23 on the latest Hyperlite and O’Brien products. Boat crews made their ways to various Poker Run stops checking out the luminous Chimney Rock and keeping the stoke high with Rockstar Energy, Roswell Marine, and JL Audio. Experiencing one of the best days of the summer, families and new riders were dialing in new tricks and receiving first-class instruction from Nautique Team athletes. Young rippers up to age thirteen took to the waters for the GromFest, a fun contest of all disciplines and skill levels where they showcased their latest line of tricks.

Awards

Kane Ward threw down at the GromFest earning the Little Legend Award alongside Trace Cox whose friendly attitude earned him the Boat Buddy Award. Throwing down behind the Super Air Nautique G23 with all new grabs, Jackson Clifford took the Best New Trick Award of the weekend, followed by Coleman Clifford who took a massive digger earning the Best Crash Award. The New Shredder Award went to Evan Burleson who has been riding for about a year and landed a wake to wake on Lake Martin after his private sessions with the Nautique Pro athletes.

Showcasing a taste of Alabama’s homegrown southern hospitality, owners and families came decked out in their favorite Country Western attire to salute one another at the Stables at Russell Crossroads for Saturday’s banquet. Owners received awards based on their world-renowned Nautiques including The Zuelzke’s who took home the Oldest Nautique Award with their stunning 1964 Ski Nautique. Dylan, Dallas, and Devin traveled over 1000 miles and 19 hours to join us for this spectacular weekend, winning the award of Longest Journey traveled by a Nautique owner. Heith Comer took home the Best Rig Award with his 2018 Nautique GS22 and truck combination.

“I haven’t had this much fun in one day in a very long time! Everyone, and I do mean everyone, have been nothing but perfect hosts. Great planning by the entire team who put on this event, including the beautiful venue, boats, and weather,” said Nautique Southeast Regatta attendee Scott Branum.

Southwest Next

The Nautique Southeast Regatta represented what wake is all about with over 150 attendees making the Ridge Marina a gathering to meet new friends and shake familiar hands alongside the top brands in wake. Nautique Boats and The WWA will head west for the Nautique Southwest Regatta this September in Parker, Arizona.

Watts Bar Lake played host to an epic battle for the banjos at the Malibu Factory Smoky Mountain Pro presented by Rockstar Energy.

Epic performances

Friday’s quarterfinal rounds were on fire behind the Malibu M235 powered by the latest Malibu Monsoon Engine, bringing a certain intensity to the starting dock on Saturday morning. Fans filled in on the water and lined the shores of Malibu’s Loudon, TN facility as the riders hit the water to deliver the pinnacle of wakeboard competition to the hometown crowd. The ladies delivered performances of epic proportion, looking to see who would land on top of the podium at the very first WWA WBWS equal podium prize money event.

In the Pro Women’s division, Rockstar Energy athlete Zahra Kell (AUS) made history taking home the largest amount of prize money a female wakeboarder has ever received. Kell stomped two stand up passes that included a whirly bird in her first pass, to then officially lock up the top spot with one of the cleanest dum dums we’ve ever seen for a final score of 90.00. The second place spot went to Dallas Friday (USA) who looked so comfortable behind the Malibu M235 throwing a bat wing and T/S Off-Axis 540 for a score of 85.00. Rounding out the podium in third, Meagan Ethell (USA) threw down a super clean wrapped mute F/S 540 for 82.67 points.

Largest amount of prize money

“I’m super stoked that all of my hard work paid off this weekend, I was really happy with my run so to take the win felt that much better. It’s so awesome to be the first woman to grab the equal prize money with a first place finish! This has been such a great event, thanks to everyone who helped put it on!” said Rockstar athlete Zahra Kell.

The Pro Men’s division saw quite the shake-up with a series of events dictating a crazy final round. Another Rockstar Energy athlete took the win today with Tony Iacconi (AUS) coming out on top for his first-ever Malibu Factory Pro win. Iacconi earned a 95.67 score starting off his run with an Indy Moby Dick to lay down a roast beef crow mobe 540 and a tail grab front blind mobe in his second pass. Harley Clifford (AUS) came out charging in the final round opening his run with his signature tail grab KGB to the flats for a second place score of 91.67. Malibu athlete, Massi Piffaretti (ITA) showed up displaying his unique Italian style with every trick, throwing his seatbelt to late tail grab tantrum to blind for a third place score of 90.00.

“It’s been nearly three years since I’ve won a Wakeboard World Series stop so I’m super happy to have taken the win today! Being third off the dock and watching all the boys throw down, I knew had my work cut for me and needed to give it my all out there. I’m just so stoked and I couldn’t be happier right now,” commented Rockstar athlete Tony Iacconi.

The 2018 Malibu Factory Smoky Mountain Pro presented by Rockstar Energy took over the Tennessee River this weekend with a battle for the banjo. Men and women from nearly 10 countries made the trip to Loudon, Tennessee, the birthplace of all Malibu boats, to go head to head for a spot on the podium. Pulled by the best-in-class Malibu M235, the riders were eager and the stakes were high. As stop #4 of the WWA Wakeboard World Series (WBWS), crucial ranking points were on the line in addition to the $47,500 in prize money up for grabs.

The contest commenced on Saturday with Pro Women’s Quarterfinals first off the dock. Dallas Friday (USA), Meagan Ethell (USA), and defending Factory Pro champion Nicola Butler (USA) each won their heats with progressive runs and score-boosting style. The Pro Men’s Quarterfinals brought huge air and impressive execution to Watts Bar Lake. Tony Iacconi (AUS), Shota Tezuka (JPN), 2017 Factory Pro winner Nic Rapa (AUS), and current WBWS leader Harley Clifford (AUS) each came out on top of their heats to advance to the next round.

Sunday’s action was open to the public and local fans flocked by both land and boat to catch a glimpse of the competition. The event offered a unique opportunity for Malibu factory staff and their families to see their boats in action right at the source, pulling some of the world’s best wakeboarders.

“It’s really cool because these guys (Malibu staff) make all these great boats that we get to ride behind so to have it in their backyard is awesome,” said Malibu team rider, Oli Derome. “A lot of the employees are out here today and get to see what they work for and what we like to do. It’s a great combination for everyone.”

With fan-focused onshore activities such as face painting, inflatable slides, complimentary ice cream, and giveaways from Malibu Boats and Rockstar Energy, the pros stayed focused as semifinals began. For the Women’s Semifinals, Nicola Butler (USA), Dallas Friday (USA), and Meagan Ethell (USA) again came out on top of their heats looking like a strong three for finals. Shota Tezuka (JPN), Tony Carroll (USA), Nic Rapa (AUS), and Tony Iacconi (AUS) battled their way to the top spot in each of their heats, securing a place in the finals.

MALIBU-FACTORY-SMOKY-MOUNTAIN-PRO-2018

The Women’s finals presented a fully stacked top six riders. Taking full advantage of the massive M235 wake, the women went big, got risky, and put it all on the table. Meagan Ethell (USA) came out on top with a score of 91.33, featuring a super clean nose grab frontside 540, roll to blind, and Moby Dick. Jamie Lopina (USA) stole second place with back to back heelside 540s and a crowmobe scoring an 86.67. Dallas Friday (USA) came in third place with big, clean tricks in her signature style, earning a final score of 83.33.

The Men’s Finals came in hot with doubles, double-ups, and a broken board as the final round of the day began. Nic Rapa (AUS) stole the show and won the finals despite increasing wind and chop. His two stand up passes including a double indy toeside backroll, double cab roll, and both frontside and heelside 900s earned him a clean 94.00. Harley Clifford’s (AUS) double tantrum and nose grab back mobe 540 led him to a score of 89.67. The Aussies swept the podium as Tony Iacconi (AUS) sealed third place. He finished strong with a huge double cab roll and backside 720 after falling first trick, with a score of 87.67.

girls-podiumMALIBU-FACTORY-SMOKY-MOUNTAIN-PRO

The Malibu Factory Smoky Mountain Pro results led to a shuffling of the WWA WBWS overall rankings. Meagan Ethell (USA) moved into first place while Jamie Lopina (USA) moved up two spots with her podium finish, putting her in fifth place overall for the women. For the men, Tony Iacconi (AUS) moved up one spot into fourth place. Nic Rapa (AUS) increased his ranking by two spots into second place and Harley Clifford (AUS) remains the leader of the series. This weekend’s shakeups prove that with two stops to go, the race for the Title is far from over.

The 2018 Factory Pro brought good weather and great times for all who attended. Malibu Factory Pro barrels, banjos, and prize money were awarded to the top athletes after a full day of power and progression.

Ever wondered what it would be like to travel around the world doing what you love? Well for Charlotte Bryant wakeboarding is what she loves and traveling around the world is how she does it. Lucky girl.

How did you start wakeboarding?
Freddie Carter and his sister Fran asked me try it behind this little boat on our holiday to Cyprus. They then took me down to JB ski in London and I gave kneeboarding a try. I did find it fun and then I tried wake boarding and I was hooked.

Do you do any other boardsports?
I can snowboard and surf. well kind of.. Haha! I just need to give myself a bit more practice.

What do you like the most about wakeboarding? What do you dislike?
I love the vibe of riding with the girls out at Cables wake park in Australia. We have such a good crew here! I also love the feeling of landing new tricks, or scaring yourself so silly and when you survive you are so relieved! I hate how serious it can get at some point, I just need to remember the reason I started is because it’s fun! The business aspect of it can take over sometimes and I just need to remind myself why I started.

Name a trick you would like to do one day?
Heelside 900 off the Kicker and a Kgb on the boat.

Name the best tricks you land everyday?
Late to roll to blind and a tootsie are my go to tricks on the boat.

Which do you prefer, rails, kickers or air tricks ?
When I am riding cable I try to mix it up with a bit of everything. I like to be an all around rider and work on all aspects of the sport.

CHARLOTTE BRYANT KICKER

If you could have a session with anyone, who would it be?
On the cable I love riding out at cables with Courtney Angus, Marilyn Pruitt and Tor Young. The stoke is always so high and we have a blast!
On the boat I love to ride with the Waldrops out in Orlando.

Which rider male or female inspires you?
Male rider – Raph Derome is awesome to watch he kills it on the boat and cable! Love seeing people who can ride both!
Female rider – Dallas Friday has always been an inspiration to me. She is always so ballsy and kills it on a wakeboard, even after a baby!

Is it dif cult to be a female rider in this male world?
No I wouldn’t say it’s easy. I know there are more males in the sport so that is why there is always more exposure for them. But it doesn’t mean the females don’t work as hard as them. With having girls out there that are pushing the sport and that could probably beat some of the guys! We are trying very hard not to be left behind!

Tell us a bit about your home spots?
My home spot is Liquid Leisure. So I have a pretty amazing spot, I have a sick boat to ride behind and Stuart is always making the cable better and better! I 100% need to get out on the cable more this season. I just get sidetracked and end up riding the boat mostly!

Do you always ride alone?
Not in the winter when I am in Australia I ride with the Cables crew and in Orlando I have the girls, Hollie Waldrop, Taylor Mccullough and Raimi Rutledge. At home though I pretty much ride on my own.

Do you ride the whole year?
Yes I have lived the endless summer for the past three years. It’s great because I am not a fan of winter. I do always make sure that I take a couple of months off during the year as it is good to rest your body and focus on the gym.

Do you travel quite a bit because of wakeboarding?
I traveled a heap last year, I think I went on a total of 15 flights and 22 different destinations! So a lot of sky miles!

Tell us about your training routine.
I try to train as much as I can. In the winter I focus a lot on the gym side of training to try and make sure that I am strong for the upcoming season. When the comp season hits I don’t go to the gym as much as I am riding a lot more. But I try to ride 5/6 times a week on the boat.

What is your main goal for 2017?
I want to improve my riding, get more style and push myself and tick off some tricks on my trick list.

Any contests ahead?
I just got an invite to the World Games which I am stoked about. This contest only runs every 4 years after the Olympics. It is a really cool contest with a big following as there are 100’s of other sports at the contest. Other than that one just the standard UK Nationals, Europeans, Worlds and the European tour.

Tell us your ranking in 2016?
In 2016 I claimed my 8th UK national title, which was nice.

What can we hope for you in 2017?
Wish me luck in the world games. I got silver in the last event I want to better that and get gold! It will take a lot of hard training though there are some really really good riders out there that are up and coming!!

Any shoutouts?
A shoutout to Mastercraft UK, Extreme, Hyperlite and Protec for the support!

WWA TORONTO : Cory Teunissen and Dallas Friday Win the Nautique WWA Wakeboard National Championships at the CNE in Toronto

Today, the world’s most decorated professional men and women wakeboard riders competed at the world-famous Canadian National Exhibition (CNE) for the fourth and final day of the 2016 Nautique WWA Toronto Wakeboard World Championships. A record crowd filled the shorelines to watch the incredibly talented athletes fight for more than $60K in prize money and showcase the sport at its highest level behind the three-time boat of the year, the Super Air Nautique G23. In addition to the World Championships, the event served as the final stop of the Nautique Wake Series and ultimately determined the overall series champions with an additional $30K up for grabs.

Pro Men riders began the day with the semifinals as they battled for the opportunity to become one of just eight riders slated to compete in the highly anticipated finals. Parker Siegele (AUS) rode strong in Heat 1 to grab the win and a transfer position, while Nic Rapa (AUS) controlled Heat 2. A huge run by Damien Adam (MRI) allowed him to emerge with the highest score in Heat 3 and Team Nautique Rider Mike Dowdy (USA) demonstrated his ability to uncork massive tricks with the G23’s perfectly shaped wake against the best riders in the world.

With the most talented field in wakeboarding history, riders from around the globe raved about the award-winning Super Air Nautique G23’s capability to launch riders higher and further than any other wakeboarding boat on the market. Cory Teunissen stunned the field with two stand up passes that included a Moby Dick 540 and huge Switch Nose Grab Heelside 900 during the Pro Men’s final to his claim his first World Championship and a score of 93.33. Teunissen also took home the $5K for winning the 2016 Nautique Wake Series Championship. Team Nautique Rider Mike Dowdy perfectly executed his signature double flip for a 87.67 to take second on the day and in the final Nautique Wake Series standings. The youngster Nic Rapa is one of the flashiest riders on the tour and kept fans on the edge of their seats with a stellar run and score of 85.00 to complete the podium in third.

“I’m beyond stoked to walk away as the Pro Men’s winner here at the 2016 Nautique WWA Wakeboard World Championship,” said Teunissen. “The WWA and Nautique put on a fantastic event and the entire Pro Men’s field left nothing on the table. This has been a dream of mine since I was a little boy and it feels great to accomplish one of my childhood goals.”

In the Pro Women’s finals, competitors shined behind the rider-favorite Super Air Nautique G23 with amazing performances that had the crowd roaring in one of the closest finals of the season Dallas Friday (USA) kept the momentum rolling from a strong qualifying performance earlier in the week and successfully nailed technical tricks en route to the overall win and 2016 World Championship. It was an emotional win for Friday as she recently became a mother and made an impressive season debut by returning to competition with a statement. Narrowly missing out on the top spot, Giorgia Gregoria (ITA) rode well to earn the runner-up position with an 82.17.  Despite the stiff competition, Amber Wing (AUS) continued her spectacular season by rounding out the podium in third and netting a score of 77.33. Team Nautique Rider Raimi Merritt (USA) used consistency throughout the entire five round Nautique Wake Series to score the overall series championship and take home $5K in prize money.

“It’s an incredible feeling to compete at the Nautique WWA Toronto Wakeboard World Championship and come out on top at my first contest of the 2016 season,” said Friday. “The talent level is at an all-time high right now and all of the girls are riding flawlessly, which required me to stay focused and lay it all on the line each time I hit the water.”

Gregoria, who lives in Italy, made the long trek across the pond to compete in her very first Nautique WWA Toronto Wakeboard World Championship and surprised many of her competitors with a second place finish.

WWA TORONTO 5 JDWEBB

“This is my first time competing at the World Championships, the water here at Lake Ontario is perfect and the wake is much bigger than what I am used to riding on back at home in Italy,” said Gregoria. “I loved everything about the event here in Toronto and I exceeded the expectations I set for myself. My goal was just to qualify for the finals, which makes being on the podium that much more special and gives me confidence when coming back in the future.”

The industry-leading Super Air Nautique G23’s flawless wake allowed Pro Wakeskate riders to push the limits and take their riding to an all-new level. Brian Grubb (USA), who placed second during yesterday’s qualifier, returned for redemption and consistently landed a variation of technical twists and flips to steal the win with an 83.33. Grubb’s win helped him secure the Nautique Wake Series Championship and an additional $2,500 bonus. Austin Polterock’s (USA) 71.67 was good enough to take second, while the final podium spot went to Danny Hampson (USA) with a 64.17 in third. The trio’s superb riding led the United States to a sweep of the Pro Wakeskate podium.

Future wakeboarding stars hit the water for the Jr. Pro Men (14-18) finals showcasing the insane level of riding coming from the next generation behind the Super Air Nautique G23. The riders were on fire and provided tons of thrilling action that included sheer determination from Guenther Oka (USA) who used a score of 87.67 to become crowned World Champion. The battle was intense for the final podium positions as Lewy Watt (AUS) and Jake Pelot (USA) went toe-to-toe in order to one up each other. In the end, Watt prevailed for second, just ahead of Pelot in third. Australia’s Cobe France was awarded the overall championship in the Nautique Wake Series and filled his pockets with a $2,500 scholarship fund courtesy of Nautique Boats.

The fourth and final day of competition at the 2016 Nautique WWA U.S. Wakeboard National Championships took place on Saturday at the Dallas Landing Park as the world’s best riders competed behind the three-time wakeboard boat of the year, the Super Air Nautique G23 towboat. Gorgeous weather and perfect conditions on the water treated thousands of spectators along the shorelines to an epic showdown that witnessed champions crowned in the Pro Men, Pro Women, Jr. Pro Men and Pro Wakeskate divisions. The G23’s incredible wake and industry leading pull continued to elevate the sport as the star-studded lineup threw down massive hits throughout the afternoon.

Following yesterdays Pro Men’s division Quarterfinal qualifying, athletes resumed with their respective Semifinal Heats for a chance to earn a position in the final showdown. Italian Massi Piffaretti (ITA) led the way during Heat 1, while Nautique Rider Noah Flegel (USA) stole the glory and a transfer position in Heat 2. A stacked lineup filled the roster for Heat 3, but Tony Iaconni (AUS) prevailed with the highest score. The final Heat of the day watched Nautique Rider Mike Dowdy (USA) show exactly how far the Super Air Nautique G23 has taken the sport with an insane run heading into the finals.

When the Pro Men riders kicked off their Final runs of the weekend, fans littered the beach to watch the sports brightest stars uncork the biggest tricks of the entire weekend. Australian Tony Iaconni (AUS) emerged victorious by nailing his run with a variety of technical tricks, including a front blind mobe to score a 92.67. The runner-up position went to Nic Rapa (AUS), who rode consistently all day to score 88.67. This is one of my favorite stops of the season, which motivated me to give it everything I had and go huge for the crowd.”

The Pro Women entered the final day of competition determined to showcase their talent in front of a large crowd while competing behind the three-time boat of the year, Super Air Nautique G23. After a confidence inspiring performance in her qualifying run on Friday, Amber Wing (AUS) kept the momentum rolling as she landed big tricks to outduel the competition with an 86.67. Narrowly missing out on the victory, Team Nautique Rider Raimi Merritt (USA) recorded a near flawless run to earn a solid second place finish with a score of 81.67. Despite an intense battle for the final step on the podium, Nicola Butler (USA) nailed a strong run to beat out her competitors as judge’s awarded her with a 77.50.
