Chengdu, China – History was made last week at the brand-new Panda Wakepark cable, purpose-built for The World Games. Selected based on their world rankings and victories in major competitions, the planet’s top wakeboarders gathered for a long-awaited showdown — and it was Germany’s Julia Rick who stole the spotlight on the Open women division .

The Return of Cable Wakeboarding to The World Games

It had been twenty years since cable wakeboarding last featured at The World Games, with its only appearance in Duisburg, Germany, back in 2005. Known as a multi-sport event for disciplines outside the Olympic and Paralympic programs, The World Games first took place in 1981 in the United States, offering athletes from non-Olympic sports a global stage.

In 2005, four waterski and wakeboard disciplines were on the schedule: Barefoot, Boat Wakeboard, Cable Wakeboard, and Overall Waterski. Back then, Denise De Haan (NED) claimed gold in the women’s cable event, with Kirsten-Brigitte Leifel (GER) and Pauline Dyrschka (GER) rounding out the podium.

Julia Rick Reclaims Her Throne

Fast forward to 2025, and the sport has evolved into a high-powered spectacle, with athletes pushing the limits of what’s possible on a cable. In the women’s division, all eyes were on Julia Rick — the multiple-time world champion and global icon of women’s wakeboarding.

After narrowly missing gold at the World Championships in Paris last September, Rick came to Chengdu with one mission: to win. She delivered under pressure, combining flawless execution with her trademark technical mastery to secure the top step of the podium.

“I’ve been dreaming about this moment since Paris,” said Rick after her victory. “To win gold here, at The World Games, with the world watching, is just incredible.”

Italian rising star Vanessa Titarelli claimed silver, proving once again she’s a serious contender for the sport’s future. Bronze went to the Netherlands’ Sanne Meijer, the reigning Cable World Champion, who also competed in the boat wakeboard event earlier in the week.

Guenther Oka & Julia Rick

Victor Salmon walked away with the win in the pro men’s division, Julia Rick took first place in the pro women’s category, and young ripper, Fynn Bullock took top honors in junior men. With this being the final stop, the overall winners were also announced. Guenther Oka and Julia Rick ended up crowned 2019 US Park Pro champions.

“This has been one of the most progressive park series I’ve ever been apart of and watching the level of riding climb through each round was insane,” said Oka.

“I’m super stoked to win the final stop of the US Park Pro and become the overall champion! Big thanks to the organizers of the series. I can’t wait to join the tour again next year!” added Rick.

All three cable parks – Wake Island, Quarry Cable Park, and Terminus Wake Park – hosted amazing events and the athletes came out, ripping and showing total commitment. Interestingly, all three venues had different winners in the pro men’s and junior men’s divisions. The organization has already confirmed that there will be a second edition in 2020.

80 000 visitors celebrate MASH 2019

“It was hot in every sense of the word. Top-class events, huge crowds of spectators braving the sun and an atmosphere that you almost only get here at MASH – what more could you want?,” smiled Marion Schöne, CEO of Olympic Park Munich, as she reflected on a successful MASH 2019.
From 28 to 30 June, 80,000 visitors flocked to the Olympic Park Munich to experience three days of action sports. “I am delighted that despite the heat so many people came here to the Olympic Park. With MASH, we and our partners have once again touched a nerve. I am particularly pleased that the women’s events proved so popular with the crowd.”

Wakeboarding, skating, BMX, dancing, shopping, admiring, listening to music and chilling – the MASH Fest was a celebration of everything that makes the action sports scene so special. Around 100 stands offered visitors all manner of fun and entertainment. “I am convinced that it is this mix of high-class contests and the MASH Fest that makes the event so popular and successful,” said Marion Schöne. This year once again the MASH Fest was a central meeting point for people of all ages and interests with its interactive zones, music, art, culture and infotainment.

She came to win – and she certainly didn’t disappoint. Germany‘s Julia Rick won the first Wakeboard Park Women‘s Contest at the Olympic Park in front of 10,000 fans. Things remained exciting right up until the end, with America’s Anna Nikstad leading the way in the standings until Rick’s final run. The nine-time world champion rose to the challenge and threw down a Toeside Backside 720 on the big kicker, combining this banger trick with a clean run over the other obstacles to push Anna Nikstad off top spot. “I am so happy to have won here. The contest here is really special and the park is technical and challenging to ride,” commented the 26 year-old. Third spot went to Mary Rougier (France).

Dominik Hernler

“What a weekend,” smiled Wakeboard Park Men’s Contest winner Dominik Hernler, who won the event for the second time after triumphing in 2016. Unlike in the women’s event, the Austrian claimed victory with his first run on the course in Munich. Second place went to Liam Peacock (UK) and third to John Dreiling (USA). “I had something up my sleeve for the second run, but in the end I didn’t need it,” commented 27-year-old Hernler. “The whole MASH weekend was insane,” said Jascha Wronka, who was in charge of the Wakeboard Park Contest. “The fans could see even more different tricks in even more different varieties than last year thanks to the new set-up.” He was also pleased with the success of the inaugural Team Contest, which the team of John Dreiling (USA), Anna Nikstad (USA) and Liam Peacock (UK) won on Friday.

INTERVIEW OF JULIA RICK

First, we would like to know how long you’ve been riding?
I started wakeboarding around 6 years ago.

What made you want to start wakeboarding?
I heard about a cable park close to my home – Wasserski Bleibtreusee in Brühl – and so I decided to try it out and completely fell in love ! As most of the people already know I’ve played soccer on a professional level. In the beginning I couldn’t be on the water so often until I stopped playing soccer. In 2013 I started competing professionally in Wakeboarding.

You’re the first rider who wins the title in both of the world championships, what does that mean to you?
Yeah, that’s right. 2016 was another perfect season for me. I became the first rider in Wakeboarding history winning the World Championships of both federations (World Wakeboard Association & International Waterski and Wakeboard Federation) in one year. This huge achievement really means a lot to me, it was the perfect end of a long competition season. Making history and in the same time pushing women’s wakeboarding is a big success for me and definitely makes me proud.

What can you tell us about the other competitors this year? Did you ever feel pressured?
The riding level of the girls is definitely getting higher and there are a lot of young riders coming up. However, I did not feel pressured or anything like that. I think it’s important to watch yourself when it comes to competitions. If you feel confident in your riding, then just hit the water and have fun

Would you say that you achieved your dream? How does it feel to be an example for wakeboard girls?
Becoming “overall” World Champion was one of my goals and I could finally achieve it. I would not say dream because it sounds kinda unreal or illusive.  I definitely want to push women’s Wakeboarding and it makes me proud to be an idol for several girls. This season was not only successful on the competition side, but I also pushed women’s Wakeboarding by inventing several new tricks and being the first female rider ever competing in “Wake The Line” with 10.000 spectators.

I’ve observed you and your training regimen the last few years. You are a fighter and you are not afraid to push yourself unremittingly. Do you think that is the secret of your success?
If you want to achieve a lot and to be on top you really have to work hard. Maybe I got also a bit of talent for Wakeboarding but the main key is my consistent training on and off the water. However, it is very important to have fun when you are on the water! Furthermore I’m not scared of crashing or anything, I have respect for big tricks, that is normal, but fear only slows you down.

We suspect that after such strong end to the season, you will not be twiddling your thumbs this winter, what do you plan to do?
After my last competition this year I was at home for about one month. I did not go wakeboarding, only cardio and strength training and went to the university. At the moment I’m studying at the German Sports University of Cologne and doing my Master’s degree in Sports Management.
Right now I’m in Thailand for about one month for some winter training. Afterwards I will go back home again to study and write some exams. In early 2017 I will be traveling again somewhere warm to prepare myself for the season 2017.

Do you have any new goals? What are they?
I want to continue to push the sport in the women’s division. For sure I want to defend my titles but I also would like to be part in more events like “Wake The Line”. These events gain a lot of media attention and are good for the sport! I also want to develop my riding, land a lot of new tricks, but the most important thing is to always have fun while riding and to stay healthy and fit!

You have a real style and we love to watch you ride, is there a rider who inspires you?
I watch a lot of Wakeboarding videos to get inspired for new obstacle hits or air tricks. There are so many good riders who inspire me, hard to name only one. It really impresses me how Lior Sofer maintains his riding level for such a long time throughout the years! He is still one of the best riders and rewarded himself with another world champion title this year!
